Protecting your dog from ticks in the summer will be one of your biggest challenges and responsibilities. That's why we set out to find 6 ways that will help you combat this problem and have a hassle-free and fun summer with your furry best friend.

1.      Use an effective tick prevention for your dog: there is an awful lot of anti-parasite products on the market, some more effective than others against certain parasites. Best talk to your vet about spot-on or oral parasite control options that are guaranteed to cover ticks too.

2.      Use appropriate repellents: spray your dog's clothing and accessories, following the manufacturer's directions. Also carry a tick removal tool and antiseptic solution for any bites that may befall your pooch.

3.      Wear appropriate clothing: long sleeves and pants tucked into shoes when you are walking your dog in a tick habitat. Stick to the centre of trails and avoid long grass. Wearing shorts is a straight-up invitation to dinner for hungry buggers.

4.      Look after the grass in your garden: urban wildlife can bring ticks into gardens, so try to keep grass low, clear wild vegetation and keep seating or play areas away from borders and vegetation.

5.      Don't bring ticks home: it's quite normal to get a tick without seeing it. So check yourself carefully when you return from а walk with your dog. Remove outer layers of clothing before going indoors. Have someone check you for attached ticks and do the same with your dog. You can see exactly how in our article Dogs and ticks - 5 things to keep in mind

6.      Consider getting a Lyme disease vaccination: If your dog visits areas at high risk of ticks, vaccination can offer an extra level of protection against this deadly disease, even if regular tick prophylaxis is used, which is not always a guarantee of protection. Ask your vet about vaccination.
